Mystery in Lost Valley

The Story

Mystery in Lost Valley is an “Agatha Christie” inspired murder mystery. It is an intriguing, exciting story full of fascinating characters and plenty of good old-fashioned mystery elements. The drama unfolds with twists, turns, and red herrings. The suspense builds as the tension rises.

The story begins in 1968 when John Robinson and five other college students take a road trip from Michigan State University to Lost Valley Resort in Northern Michigan. The weekend getaway is such a success that the group decides to reunite at the same resort exactly ten years later. But then, before the weekend ends, two of the friends, Paul and John’s younger brother Gary, have an altercation that leads to tragedy.

Fast forward ten years. John Robinson, now a pulmonary specialist, flies from California to Michigan for the ten-year reunion at the resort. He likely would have forgotten about the promised reunion if not for an anonymous reminder letter received months before. When He lands in Michigan, he discovers that a huge blizzard is descending upon the state.

After John arrives at Lost Valley Resort, so do his old college friends. The ten years have brought surprising changes to everyone in the group. But the morning after they all arrive, one of the friends turns up dead. There is plenty of suspicion to go around. Tension at the resort grows as accusations are exchanged and alliances are formed. All of the primary characters have viable motives, some of which come to light early, and some later in the story, making for some shocking revelations. All of this while the blizzard of the century rages outside.

In writing this story, Arthur drew on his experience of growing up in a resort town in Northern Michigan. His parents owned a Motor Inn, and he was on the ski team in high school. These experiences help bring Mystery in Lost Valley to life.

Mystery in Lost Valley is a tense page-turner filled with thrills, suspense, and a rollicking climax that will keep you guessing until the end.

Lost Valley Resort

Lost Valley is a fictional ski resort located east of Gaylord, Michigan. Below is a trail map for the resort; a depiction of the fireplace that is the architectural highlight of the lodge; and an example of the “Lost Valley” lithographs displayed in each guest room at the resort.

The Great Blizzard

Although Lost Valley Resort is fictional, the blizzard of ’78 was the most widespread and severe winter storm in Michigan’s history. For two days, it devastated the state, dumping nearly thirty inches of snow and creating snowdrifts of fifteen to twenty feet. All major highways were closed. Over 100,000 vehicles were abandoned. Arthur remembers the storm well (He was ten at the time).
